Tesla Model X

The Model X is one superb car that has shown extreme popularity. Whether you're not a fan of electric vehicles or are, you'll undoubtedly have some respect for this piece of artwork. But, it's got many enthusiasts questioning whether you can put a roof box on a Model X.

The Model X has falcon-wing doors that open from the roof. Therefore, you cannot attach a rooftop cargo box as it'll disable access into the vehicle. But despite this, you can connect a hitch-mounted storage device located at the car's rear.

Although you cannot get a stylish, sleek cargo box on the Model X's roof, it's possible to attach a hitch-mounted type. Although many don't like these, they provide the same benefits as a rooftop box. To learn more about this and the best options available, we recommend becoming knowledgeable on the below.

What cargo carriers are available for a Model X?

Tesla Model X

In the cargo-carrying world, there are several options: boxes, bags, hitch-mounted, and specialist carriers. However, many of these need to be attached to a vehicle roof. Because of how the Model X's doors open, all rooftop cargo carriers aren't available.

But, not all hope is lost. That's because you can purchase a hitch-mounted cargo carrier located on the car's rear. It's a storage device that attaches to the Model X's hitch (only comes supplied with the Tesla's towing package).

Now you know this, there are several options you can select. Of course, Tesla has their solutions, but it's only a snowboard/ski and bike rack at this current time. Therefore, those wanting to transport other goods can seem stuck. However, the 2" hitch can fit all hitch-mounted cargo carriers of the same size.

Before doing this, you must consider the clearance space for the boot to open, how it can be charged, and its tow capacity (3,500 lbs). The extra room at the rear could make it more challenging for everyday usage, but it'll provide you with that additional storage section. If you want to follow this route, we recommend becoming familiar with the below recommendations.

Best hitch-mounted cargo carrier for a Model X

After knowing that attaching a hitch-mounted cargo carrier on a Model X is possible, we're sure many people are relieved. You can head out on a long road trip knowing that you have enough storage for all the essentials. However, which options are available for a Model X? Here's what we recommend:

1. Yakima Exo SwingBase

The Model X is a fine piece of technology that deserves a hitch-mounted cargo carrier that's represented in the same manner. That's where this Yakima EXO Swingbase (on amazon) comes into play. The entire system is completely customisable with the various EXO system options available, making the cargo carrier useful for many needs.

With these advantages comes along their swing design. You don't lose access to the Model X's boot space from Yakima implementing this design option. Instead, this hitch-mounted cargo carrier can swing outwards, granting you room to open the boot effortlessly.

2. CURT 18153 60 x 24-Inch Basket Hitch Cargo Carrier

Although the Yakima Exo SwingBase is remarkable, we understand it's not a budget-friendly option. For a more basic yet still rewarding hitch-mounted cargo choice, the CURT Basket Hitch Cargo Carrier (on amazon) could be beneficial.

It can seamlessly be attached to the 2" hitch that's located on the Model X and can provide a storage solution that can withstand around 500 lbs of capacity. Although this is superb, you might lose access to the car's boot if you overload this storage device. Therefore, even though it's a cheaper option, it removes access to another storage space.

3. Camco Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier

Moving further down the budget-friendly line comes the Camco Hitch-Mounted Cargo Carrier (on amazon). For under $100, it's undoubtedly the best option. It follows a straightforward design, can hold upwards of 500 lbs, and attaches itself to 2" receivers.

Although it isn't larger than the Reese option, it can still hold enough extra cargo. However, similar to the above, it's possible to lose access to the boot. Although you could add an extender to the receiver, it could lower the weight capacity limit. In addition to this, adding an extender means extra length onto the Model X. Although this seems okay, some charging points don't consider this.

Conclusion

After reading the post, you should have a solidified idea about whether it's possible to attach a cargo rooftop box onto a Tesla Model X. Unfortunately, it isn't possible for those wanting to go down this route.

However, where there's a will, there's a way. Therefore, we've recommended using either Tesla's or third-parties hitch-mounted cargo carrier options. By using these, you'll gain access to that much-needed additional room while keeping the general aesthetics of the vehicle.

We mentioned some options above, but hitch-mounted cargo carriers aren't restricted to these brands. Many are available; these are only some general "favorites" for Model X owners. If you don't like these and choose another option, make sure you purchase something that fits a 2" receiver. Otherwise, you'll need an adaptor, and it'll reduce the weight capacity.
